Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia
2011
The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …
2018
In recent decades, the studies on diplomacy in the modern age enjoyed renewed interest. While entering into a consolidated historiographical tradition, the most recent research focused on highlighting not only the importance of diplomatic "practices", but also of the actors, in a twofold dimension, both public and private. The change in the point of observation, from the institutions to those acting within institutions, allowed to deepen the specifics of the experiences, to read the activities of individuals in relation not only to international political dynamics, but also to the management of power in most circumscribed local contexts. The present essay intends to insert itself into this …
Gennadios Scholarios and the Church of the Holy Apostles
2020
The article tests the established view that Gennadios Scholarios, the first patriarch of Constantinople after the 1453 Conquest, used the church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople as the seat of the Patriarchate for a few months in 1454 before moving to the building complex of the Pammakaristos monastery. After pointing out that all the sources that narrate the story of the installation of the Patriarchate in the famous Byzantine church date from the 16th century or later, the author examines sources contemporary with the events, including texts written by Scholarios himself. The aim of the article is to show that Scholarios officiated occasionally in the Holy Apostles and managed to sa…

Formy pobożności praktykowane przez nyskich bożogrobców
2016
The liturgy is the essence of life in every Church and every monastery. Before the Council of Trent the liturgical life was very rich. Every diocese and many orders introduced to the Roman Liturgy some specific characteristics and rites. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre had their own liturgy called “rite of the church of the Christ’s tomb”. It was a Roman-Gallican rite originated mainly in central France, adapted to the customs of Jerusalem. The study of the liturgy of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre from Nysa allows to highlight some specific characteristics of it. As an example we can mention the rites of Mandatum and Missa Crismatis celebrated on the Holy Thursday; Missa praesanctific…
Konstantin Velikij i sv. Elena na freskah Âna Kubena v Vozdviženskom kostele v Bžege
2019
The paper introduces the splendid representations of Emperor Constantine the Great and Saint Helena in Jan Kuben’s frescos in the church under invocation of the Triumph of the Cross in Brzeg. They testify strongly of the incessant presence of the creative reflection over the Christian ancient times in the area of Opole Silesia in the period of the Catholic reform in the 18th century. Kuben’s trompe-l’oeil constitutes a wonderful combination of deeply experienced Catholic spirituality with the genius of the artist – a visionary.
2015
ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the meaning of the impresa or device of the pomegranates, with the motto « Agro dulce », utilized by Henry IV (1425-1474), of the House of Trastamara, King of Castile from 1454 until his death. By means of a review of vestiges that remain of the device, especially in architectonic elements, I postulate that the pomegranate may have been used as the family impresa of the House of Trastamara and their descendants. This, it seems, can be deduced from the pictura of the device in several personal imprese of relatives who lived in the sixteenth century. KEYWORDS: pomegranate, devices, royal clemency, Henry IV, Catholic Monarchs, Catherine of Aragon, Charles V, Phili…
